Another day, another adventure. Go figure I didn’t learn my lesson when my bag took a week and a half to get to Kzoo over Christmas. This time, two of my bags arrived (albeit two days late), but the third bag – the same one that was MIA 2 weeks ago – went missing again on the way back. And the bummer is that this time, it had 6 months worth of meds, all the stuff I bought for my classroom and other goodies for me, clothes, DVDs, everything. Not much worth stealing, per se, but a lot of stuff I’d love to have back! Bah :(
The good news is: I’m getting to know the people at the airport really well. The bad news is: I speak English more than Swahili. So it took me a really long time today to try to get them to believe I actually live here in Dar. They kept saying, “You can fill in the report when you go back to your country, when you go home; they will compensate you there…” Then finally, an “Oh, you live here? Really? Call back in half an hour…” Too bad I'm teaching all day!!!
I’m realizing it’s a lot easier to lose a bag going to the States than it is coming back this way. Well, let me rephrase that. It’s easier at the beginning anyway, since you know you can buy stuff easily, quickly, and cheaply. I love those Trial Sections and Dollar Trees, for sure! After my few freak-out moments and times of being overwhelmed today, though, I think I’m really doing much better. At least I have a way to register my loss online now, and the people at the airport have actually been fairly friendly. And speak English. Which is nice!!!
I know it shouldn’t be a big deal. It’s just stuff, after all. But I’m starting to wonder if Delta/KLM is about finished in my book, after losing my parents luggage last summer (never to be returned), and after all the chaos on the way there and back this time. It’s starting to get old really fast! Or maybe it’s just God’s way of reminding me not to worry – that He’s got things under control – and that really, stuff is just stuff. Taking it one day at a time!!!
